END ALL FORMS OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE!
This November 25, WGNRR joins activists and allies worldwide in calling on governments to end gender-based violence in ALL its forms, including the institutional violence resulting from the failure of States to respect, protect, and fulfill sexual and reproductive rights.
As acknowledged by various Human Rights bodies,* access to comprehensive sexual & reproductive health services is a key part of ensuring women and girls’ SRHR. When governments fail to ensure access to these services, either through upholding restrictive laws or obstructive barriers, this constitutes institutional violence because of the resulting detrimental effect on women and girls’ lives. One of the clearest examples is the denial of access to safe and legal abortion (even in cases of rape or incest), where women and girls are then forced either to carry unwanted pregnancies, or resort to unsafe abortion, and are thereby subjected to cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment.
On the occasion of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign, we’ll be highlighting numbers, figures and statistics of the gross human rights violations individuals experience worldwide because of various forms of SRHR-related gender-based violence. We invite members, partners and allies to join us in calling on governments and the international community to:
- #StriketheStat and end ALL forms of gender-based violence against women, girls, the LGBTQI community, and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs), as per their obligations under international human rights law;
- Recognize the centrality of ensuring SRHR in order to end all forms of GBV, including institutional violence against women;
- Incorporate the provision of comprehensive SRH services, including access to safe and legal abortion, in all advocacy agendas geared towards ending gender-based violence, and to work with women’s organisations towards this end; and
- Provide an enabling environment for Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) to do their important work as key agents of change, free from intimidation, harassment, and discrimination.
