Are you passionate about advancing sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) and justice? The Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) is seeking dedicated individuals to join our Board of Trustees. If you are a feminist and activist with expertise in areas such as safe abortion care, SRHR advocacy, communications, policy, governance, fundraising, or representing marginalized communities, we invite you to contribute your skills and vision to our dynamic and inclusive leadership team.
About WGNRR
We are a southern-based global network that builds and strengthens movements for sexual and reproductive health, rights (SRHR), and justice. Our work is grounded in the realities of those who most lack economic, social, and political power. Through critical analysis and strategic actions, we connect members and allies, build knowledge, organize campaigns, and share resources. WGNRR works to realize the full sexual and reproductive health and rights of all people, with a particular focus on the most marginalized. We believe that achieving this goal requires transformative social change.
Values
WGNRR works within the rights, justice, and feminist frameworks. We aim to be member-focused, inclusive, and accountable in all that we do. We are committed to equality for all genders and value diversity. We are self-reflective and independent from political, governmental, or religious institutions.
Board Members
WGNRR Global is governed by an independent Board consisting of 5 members currently (April 2024). The Board members are selected via nominations, and suggestions from existing Board members, Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.
At all times, there should be at least 3 board members, with a maximum of 11, majority of whom are women. The Board should showcase diversity and inclusion. Board members are spread across various geographies, and advise and guide the Executive Director, WGNRR to perform her duties.
Tenure
Each Board member is elected for 3 years, and upon successful completion of 3 years; they may serve for another 3 years based on their performance and input from the staff. A former Board member who had served a maximum of two terms may be nominated again to the Board in emergency circumstances.
The Board has the following core responsibilities, being the highest governance body of and having overall legal responsibility for WGNRR:
(a) ensure that the institutional integrity of the organization and its consistency and advancement of defined mission, mandate and values;
(b) safeguard the organization’s financial soundness and integrity and assure the adequacy and stability of its financial resources;
(c) ensure the sound and effective leadership and management of the organization;
(d) constitute and equip to effectively perform its role and mandate; and,
(e) promote WGNRR’s work and credibility with key constituencies.
Further:
- Advances the mission, values, strategies, goals, priorities, and policies of the Network;
- The Board is responsible for the selection and recruitment of ED.
- Invited for final interview rounds or review of resumes and qualifications of recruited members.
- Informs ED of events, associations, and memberships to strengthen the Network.
- Represents the Network at external events and with key stakeholders as required.
- Board members will meet once in every two months virtually, and once in person annually.
- All Board members align with WGNRR’s values and principles and follow feminist principles.
- Board members to have requisite skills to support and strengthen WGNRR, and provide guidance and vision for furthering SRHRJ.
- The Board reviews all changes to operational policies that affect staff.
- Promotes WGNRR at global events, and informs ED of possible support needed.
- Be informed about the wider political, social, economic and legal environment within which the WGNRR operates.
Requirements
We are looking for individuals with the following expertise:
- Obstetricians/Gynecologists and Activists in Safe Abortion Care and Post-Abortion Care: Professionals who provide safe abortion services and post-abortion care. This includes those involved in medical and technical aspects, ensuring women have access to safe, timely, and respectful abortion care.
- SRHR Activists: Individuals who are passionate about and actively work towards sexual and reproductive health and rights. This includes working on initiatives that promote SRHR and address barriers to these rights.
- Communications and Policy Advocacy Experts: Professionals skilled in promoting and advocating for policies that advance SRHR. This includes developing and implementing communication strategies that influence public policy and opinion.
- Not-for-Profit Governance: Individuals with experience in managing non-profit organizations, adept at Monitoring and Evaluation and able to guide the ED in M&E frameworks, effecting stronger SRHR programs.
- Fundraising: Experience in fundraising; direct ED to funding proposals; able to share about WGNRR at fundraising meets and conclaves
- Representing Marginalized Groups: People whose work and advocacy focus on marginalized communities, ensuring their voices and needs are included in SRHR policies and programs.
Geography
We are actively seeking feminists and activists from the global south and Philippines and Netherlands (our founding by-laws requires atleast one board member to be based out of Philippines and one out of Netherlands)
