As a Manila-based global network of SRHR advocates WGNRR, reiterate that any government who fail to address sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and young people by denying access to their right to health, bodily integrity and body autonomy is committing institutional violence. WGNRR lauds the Philippine Government for not giving in to the strong opposition against the legal rights of the Filipino people.
While substantial progress has been made towards the achievement of the MDGs, the right of all women and girls to decide upon all aspects of their reproductive health has not been ensured. Women and girls living with HIV are particularly vulnerable to human rights violations when seeking sexual and reproductive health services.
In reaction to the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Law in Nigeria that criminalizes not only same sex marriage but also any advocacy and support for the rights of sexual minorities, WGNRR is calling the Nigerian Government to repeal that law and respect sexual rights in Nigeria.
Governments need to address the failures of the last 20 years and have a holistic, forward-looking, and relevant development agenda post-2015, we believe Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) must be central to the goals and targets and go beyond a very narrow reflection of SRHR as “maternal healthcare” or “reproductive health” only. Human rights must be explicitly referenced, with the understanding that any meaningful efforts towards sustainable development must posit people as the drivers of development rather than passive receivers of aid priorities and programming.
WGNRR and ICW Global calls its members, allies and partners to demand during on December 1, World AIDS Day the inclusion of SRHR of women and girls living with HIV in the post 2014-2015 development agenda. The global commitment towards “Get to Zero” will only be realised when the women and girls living with HIV are visible, recognised and not treated as criminals and second-class citizens.
WGNRR calls its members, allies and partners to demand during the 16 Days of Action Campaign the inclusion of women’s SRHR and protection of WHRD in the post 2014-2015 development agenda as to eliminate Violence against Women and fulfil states’ commitments to the Human Right all over the world.
