Grassroots sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and abortion rights organisations from five countries in Africa, gathered in Nairobi, Kenya to reaffirm commitments to promote and advance SRHR, including the right to access safe abortion information and services.
WGNRR Africa and MenEngage Alliance invite everyone to join the worldwide mobilisation for the right to safe and legal abortion this coming September 28 International Safe Abortion Day. This year at WGNRR Africa, we have decided to focus on our regional mobilization and collective involvement in ensuring that safe abortion services is a healthcare guaranteed under the grounds defined by the regional human rights framework, especially the Maputo Protocol.
We urge you to call on your national leaders to make a commitment at home and from the floor of the three conferences to support universal access to safe abortion as life-saving healthcare for anyone with an unwanted pregnancy. This call will be made also in the document Reviewing and achieving the ICPD Programme of Action – UNECE Regional Voice, which will soon be posted on the www.CSOPartnersforChange.org website. It will contain the key messages and comments that can be used to encourage Governments to submit Commitments from their countries during ICPD in November. The UNECE recommendations may differ from those of other regions but are nonetheless relevant to the full implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action, and can be adapted for other regions.
May 28 is the International Day of Action for Women’s Health,1 for over 30 years, women*, girls, advocates and allies have continued to take action, stand up and speak out for sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR). May 28 is a key day for us, as activists, to call for the promotion, protection, prioritisation and advancement of sexual and reproductive health rights on local, national and international scales.
The international community recognizes that we cannot achieve sustainable development without
prioritizing the achievement of same rights for all.
The activities that took place in 2018 stimulated and generated support for ongoing campaigns in countries where women are still endangered by unsafe abortion, threatened with criminal punishment, and subject to stigma in the absence of progressive laws and services that recognise safe abortion as a public health necessity and a fundamental human right.
