Highlights of CPD47: WGNRR endorsed statement of SOGIE caucus

April 23, 2014

WGNRR was among 97 organizations that endorsed an oral statement delivered on behalf of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) Caucus during the 47th Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD47). The statement drew attention to the violence, stigma and discrimination that people with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions experience around the world which often results in “preventable suffering, institutional violence and poverty”. Emphasizing that everyone has the right to the enjoyment of human rights, equality and non-discrimination, SOGIE Caucus criticized the attempts to silence the debate on SOGIE human rights during CPD47.

Building on the support from Asian, Pacific, Southern African and Latin American countries that have stood up for human rights of all people, SOGIE Caucus called on the governments to ensure the human rights of all people, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. The statement reads: “It is time for governments to acknowledge what we all know to be true: our lives are not negotiable.”
