Mabel Bianco for CEDAW Expert Committee
The Argentinian government put forward FEIM’s president, Mabel Bianco, as a candidate for the Committee of Experts of CEDAW for the period 2017-2021.
Mabel Bianco is a renowned advocate for women and girls’ rights in her country, in Latin America and the Caribbean and in the world. She has been an activist in the women’s movement for over 30 years and has extensive experience in defending reproductive rights, the right to health, to live a life free from violence, the right to decent work and equal conditions for men and women, as well as access to politics and participation in decision-making.
For the last three years Mabel has participated in the Women’s Major Group, recognized in the United Nations as one of the nine major actors of the Civil Society Groups and from this group, she has had a prominent role in the discussions and contributions to the 2030 Agenda and the definition of the Sustainable development Goals.
Mabel has been recognized with awards and honors both at home and abroad. In 2011 Newsweek mentioned her as one of the 150 women committed to women around the world and in 2013 she received the ” Lifetime achievement award” presented by the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights of Argentina.
When asked to comment about her candidacy Bianco said:
“I feel very honored by this possibility and I hope to be chosen to help achieve equality of women and girls in Latin America and the Caribbean and around the world. As a feminist and fighter for the rights of women and girls, especially sexual and reproductive rights, I pledge to continue advocating for their right to live without violence and to participate in all areas of political and social life without any discrimination ”
