Statement on junking of case versus WHRD Reina Mae Nasino
The Woman’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights joins civil society organisations in pressing for the immediate release of Reina Mae Nasino, a woman human rights defender illegally arrested in November 2019. The decision of the 12th Division of the Philippine Court of Appeals dated August 31 junks the warrants of arrests served on Nasino as this failed “to meet the standards of a valid search warrant, and all evidence procured by virtue thereof are deemed inadmissible.” The junking of the arrest warrants effectively junks all charges filed against Nasino.
In 2020, WGNRR condemned the Philippine government’s complete disregard of the rights of political prisoner Reina Mae Nasino and her child, River Nasino. We appealed to the Commission on Human Rights in the Philippines to investigate the various human rights violations against Reina and Baby River and ensure all actors involved are held to account.
WGNRR calls for the immediate release of the women human rights defender, Reina Mae Nasino. We continue to reiterate our call for governments to stop criminalizing dissent and stop the attacks, intimidation, harassment, imprisonment and killings of women human rights defenders.
