On May 28, the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) and the Philippine Safe Abortion Advocacy Network (PINSAN) led an online rally to amplify demands regarding women’s health amid the pandemic. Attended by a hundred women from various sectors, the rally is in line with the global commemoration of the International Day of Action for Women’s Health with the theme, “Women’s Health Matters: Ending the Inequality Pandemic and Ensuring Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights remain essential!”.

WGNRR is excited to announce that feminists and SRHR activists Alexa Johns and Nur Hidayati Handayani have recently joined our board.

Filipino artists, songwriters, storytellers, and safe abortion advocates came together to produce Pasya, a music album of 13 original songs campaigning for the decriminalization of abortion in the Philippines. Pasya music album celebrates the strength of people standing up to challenges against their rights to bodily autonomy. Through meaningful music that is light, liberating, and enabling, we are here to change the stigmatized narrative on abortion and campaign for its decriminalization in the Philippines.

Not once in my life did I imagine that a global pandemic would force all of us to stay home for months. It was challenging adjusting to the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic, and yet we are still expecting long term impact brought about by this global health challenge, even as complications in the economic and public health are already evident.

More than ever, we work in solidarity and continue our collective effort to advocate SRHR for all. We must assert that women’s access to essential SRHR information and services remains critical in responding to COVID-19.

The Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights, representing over a thousand organizations and individuals working worldwide to realize the full sexual and reproductive health and rights of all people, welcomes the upcoming focus of the 54th session of the Commission on Population and Development on population, food security, nutrition, and sustainable development, especially in light of our experience of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We call on advocates and organizations to partner with us this Women’s Month. We look forward to working with organizations who are doing or plans to: Showcase through arts and other creative methods the different actions of women in the pandemic preparedness and responseGather views of women and girls in all of their diversity on how an equal pandemic recovery and future should be Develop and distribute materials to increase awareness on protection and response against gender-based violence and on how to access sexual and reproductive health services.
